Confidence in safety

The human and environmental safety of our products is an absolute priority for Unilever.

Our approach

It is important to us that every one of our consumers knows that buying a Unilever product means the optimal combination of safety and efficacy.

The laws of the regions and countries where the product is made and sold are our starting point for developing safe products. Then we apply our own high corporate standards that require approval from our own safety specialists before we test it with consumers or place any product on the market.

Unilever has a long-established Safety & Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC) which assesses and assures the human, environmental and occupational safety of our operations and our products everywhere we operate around the world. Teams of scientific experts based at the Centre specialise in areas such as toxicology, environmental science, chemistry, microbiology, skin (dermatitis, allergy) and lifecycle assessment. They operate strictly independently of commercial considerations.

We assess all new formulations and all changes to products to make sure they are safe for you to use and for the environment. SEAC's safety and risk assessment takes into account a range of scenarios in terms of how consumers might forseeably use our products as well as how they may be disposed of. It covers all stages of the product, from manufacturing to distribution, use and disposal.

We also continuously review our assessments in the light of the most recent research and findings.
