Top food producer & third overall
Unilever has been named the top-rated food producer in the Climate Counts Company Scorecard, with a score of 71 out of a possible 100.
Unilever ranked third place out of the 56 companies assessed, only slightly behind first place electronics producer Canon, with 77 points, and second place sportswear firm Nike with 73 points.
Climate Counts is a non-profit organisation that brings companies and consumers together in the fight against climate change. The Company Scorecard aims to help consumers shop responsibly by measuring companies' commitment to reducing climate change. It looks at major US and UK companies based on their market presence.
Scores are awarded across a range of criteria. These include efforts to measure and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reduction strategies and timelines, and steps to educate employees, suppliers and customers about how they can reduce their own GHG emissions.
According to the report, "Unilever was awarded 71 points for its detailed reporting, solid corporate structure for high-level oversight of climate change issues, goal-setting and reduction efforts so far."
Henry King, sustainability manager, Unilever Safety & Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC) said: "This is recognition for our long-standing commitment to energy management and reporting in our manufacturing operations. Also our leading role in technology innovations in refrigeration and the pioneering work of brands such as Ben & Jerry's on climate change."
