Stuck indoors? Time to get out

If all summer means to you is that you can wait longer before turning the lights on – it could be a sign you’re spending too much time indoors.

You may not see it in any medical books, but 'indooritis' is an insidious condition that's bad for your long-term health and well-being – and the perils of it lurk in every home, office and shopping mall.

We've identified two common strains of indooritis to help you recognise the signs, but in most cases the cure is simple: venture out into the great outdoors.

The workaholic

If you resent your commute to work or the walk to your office as it's wasting valuable time – because time is money – then you may have fallen prey to office indooritis. The signs are obvious – you'd rather be sitting at your desk than stretching your legs, you eat lunch at your computer and you work such long hours you never see the sun – but so is the cure.

Try getting out for a walk at lunchtime, even if it's just to the corner shop, make an effort to socialise with colleagues outside the office or even get off the bus or train a stop earlier and enjoy the walk. The more you get used to stretching your legs, the more you'll like it!

The housewife

If your drive to and from your kids' school is the only time you leave the house, you could have contracted mumitis. Sufferers find that they're always busy, but it all seems to be indoors – cooking, cleaning, ironing and laundry – but help is at hand. Perhaps try walking to the shops instead of driving during the day, or meet up with friends for a stroll or a coffee. Your health and wellbeing will get a boost. And while you're enjoying that 'me' time, try a Lipton Ice Tea to help prolong the refreshing taste of the great outdoors.
