Go green for laundry

With modern machines and the latest washing powders, liquids and tablets that are more effective than ever before, it's no longer necessary to wash everything in hot water to rid of stains and brighten up your clothes.

Washing machines save us time, effort and hassle – they're not the most environmentally friendly of inventions, often using a lot of energy to get the load done.

However, there's one very simple change you can make to use less power and potentially cut your electricity bills too. All you need to do is turn down the temperature on your wash programme.

Cool washing tips

A bit like the fizzy pills you get to cure headaches, Surf biological tablets set to work even at 30°. Liquids are useful because they dissolve quickly into your wash and so it doesn't need hot water to get started on cleaning your clothes.

Surf and Persil are formulated to work perfectly well on cool wash cycles, and a turn in the machine at 30° will freshen up your fabrics just as well as a standard wash at 40°.

Cool washes are also great for protecting your coloured clothes from running, as well as putting less stress and strain on your delicate items.

Drying

And don't forget, by hanging your clothes out to dry, rather than tumble drying, you'll be doing an extra bit to help the environment. Plus your clothes will smell fresher as well!

So next time you do a load, turn the dial down, peg out the load, and notice the difference on your next energy bill – as well as enjoying the nice warm glow of having done your bit for the environment.
